ABOUT ABOUT

Black American Composers Past & Present

Join us in our next choral sing-in experience, for an exploration of works by brilliant, Black North American composers, ranging from the neoclassicist to contemporary style. We will also visit with Lynne Morrow, musicologist, director of the Oakland Symphony Chorus and director of the Vocal and Opera/Music Theater program at Sonoma State.   Lynne will discuss the contributions and backgrounds of black composers to the choral repertoire.

Our music staff and chorus volunteers have been doing research to identify Black American composers of choral music with the purpose of programming works for the Choral Society for the past six months. That research led to the selection of works for our next Sing In by: Ysaye Barnwell, Rosephanye Powell, Ulysses Kay, Nathaniel Dett, Moses Hogan, Kevin Allen, and Undine Smith Moore.

SFChoral meets every Tuesday starting January 19, 2021 from 7pm to 9pm and final sing-in "performance" on March 23, 2020. We will again make a virtual recording of two pieces TBD. Rehearsal will be from 7pm to 9pm on zoom. Links will be sent out prior to each rehearsal.

Program Fee for 10 weeks: $135 (recording fee, included).

PDF Music Packet: $20

SFChoral will purchase the music and send a PDF digital copy of all music via a link to your email address in early January. Due to copyright laws, each user must purchase a copy of their own music. It is illegal to distribute copies to others.
